Fun yoga + health tips with Nikki Ralston
By Rachel Grunwell
Here are 10 happiness and health tips from yogi Nikki Ralston:
1: Practice yoga!! There is a style of yoga for everyone these days, don’t be put of by one style you may have tried years ago and didn’t like. If you find it easy to relax and want a grounding replenishing class the go for a hatha inspired class or Yin or restorative class. If you have a very active mind and find it hard to slow down then I’d try a vinyasa flow or something more dynamic to help you focus the mind so you can drop down into relaxation at the end.
2: Eat mostly whole foods and organic where possible. A diet high in plant based foods is rich in nutrients and provides good clean energy. See an holistic nutritionist if you have any trouble figuring out what is best for you.
3: Don’t hate…. meditate. Starting and ending the day with 20min meditation can give grounding points to come back to and to replenish. “I am so much happier in myself and more patient and tolerant of others when I do this”.
4: Sleep. Take time to wind down before bed and get a good 8-hours. When we are tired we tend to feel more hungry, make poor food choices and are more irritable and stressed.
5: We need 8 hugs a day!! If that seems like way too much why not make it a goal to start with at least 4 hugs daily. We live in a world where we are constantly plugged in but less connected with others around us. Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation and anger. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.
6: Avoid using products on your skin (or in your home) with nasty chemicals in them. Our skin is our largest organ so its really important to be mindful of what we are absorbing into our systems through our skin and breathing in when we clean our homes. I use all ecostore products -http://www.ecostoredirect.co.nz/about-us/ – so that I know me and my family aren’t exposed to unnecessary toxins.
7: Get out in nature, walk with bare feet on the earth and soak up the energy from the ground. While you are out walking pick up any rubbish or micro plastics on the beach and make your contribution to keeping our country beautiful.
8: Have your phone and alerts on silent when it’s family time so that you can give your loved ones your full presence. Also having a phone free day on the weekends is liberating and refreshing for all.
9: Create a vision of how you’d like your life to be if you could do and be anything you wanted, no limitations! Then start to create goals that align with creating this in your life. Be clear, specific and set yourself dates of when you will achieve these goals. It’s amazing how much backing you will get when you are really clear with what you want.
10: Laugh often & make time for friendships that nourish and inspire you and be around people that make you simply feel good just by being around them.
